. . . about Town

With Mayor Bob

February brings with it a hint of Spring on the way and longer days. Since February is being highlighted this year as “Library Month” we would like to encourage everyone to visit our Library.

According to the Library Board President, Dr. C. L. Abercrombie, the Decatur Public Library was initially established by the city of Decatur in November 1993. The original board invited people to donate books. Peterson’s donated space at the old railway depot for the library. Later the United Way provided grants to purchase books. When the Library opened in its current location in 2001, it had one computer and one librarian. Currently the book collection has grown tremendously and computers now number thirteen. Recently the library purchased new chairs from a gift given by Wal-Mart at their grand opening.

Some things the City is working on this spring is: preparing to open the swimming pool; a new filtration system at the waste water plant that will make a huge quality improvement; evaluating available grants for City improvements utilizing a Grant Writer; an active plan to get our historical City Hall on the National Register; a personnel elevator for City Hall to make the 2nd floor functional; and looking toward City cleanup later this spring, including abandoned vehicle removal.

There are plans to schedule a “Town Hall” meeting soon, watch for announcements.

. . . about Town for the month of March will highlight our Animal Control Department.
